about

Eric Stangeland’s third album, “Wake Up,” (and his first for ToneMark Sounds) has a linear story behind it: a man feels dread about his life before having seizures and a near-death experience, and eventually heads down a bumpy road to recovery with the help from his family and close friends.

And yet, it’s a concept record that’s not grandiose. “Wake Up” has an earthy quality that sounds like a longtime band of friends - which in a lot of ways, it is. There are 12 musicians who join Eric for the album, and he has played over the years with most of them.

The first half favors louder rock and metal, but that gives way to quieter, moodier pieces, all as seven singer-lyricists navigate Eric’s story from an anxious hospital stay to realizations that life will go on.
